All of us possess an undesirable brew of industrial chemicals brought into our lives by multinational corporations. But according to a study at the University of Exeter Medical School’s European Centre for Environment & Human Health, in England, if you’re financially comfortable, your menu of discomforting toxins have a different profile than the disruptive chemicals that corrupt the tissues of the less well-off.

“We’ve found that as people become better off, changes in their lifestyle alter the types of chemicals in their bodies, rather than reducing the overall amount,” says researcher Jessica Tyrrell. “This realization has a profound impact on the way we treat chemical build ups, suggesting we should move to dealing with groups based on lifestyle, rather than earnings.”

When the scientists compared the toxins in the bodies of six different groups of people, they found significant associations between different chemicals and financial status.

The predominant toxins in the bodies of the well-to-do include mercury, arsenic, cesium and thallium. The researchers believe these come from a diet that contains more fish. In addition, rich bodies have more benzophenone-3, a component of many sunscreens.

People on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder have more lead, cadmium, antimony and bisphenol A. These chemicals are prevalent in cigarette smoke and junk food.
