Detox Your Personal Environment For Better Health

detox-your-personal-environment-for-better-health_300Sluggish digestion? Low Energy? Poor Immunity? It may be time to get your place organized. According to many traditional medical systems, a cluttered and disorganized environment can lead to chronic health problems over time. Whether at home, work, school or even in the car, clean, clutter-free surroundings are important for optimal health on every level. This philosophy extends beyond the popular Eastern system of feng shui to include a more holistic perspective of disorganization and how to overcome it for optimal health.

As humans, we are products of our environments and vice versa, since the environments we create reflect and affect our physical, mental and emotional health. When life gets cluttered, our physical, mental and emotional systems can also become cluttered and function with reduced effectiveness.

The digestive system is a perfect example of this. Healthy digestion is an efficient, organized sorting process that dictates what to keep as nourishment, where to send nutrients and what to detoxify as waste. As an integrative physician, I find that when patients describe their lives as disorganized, cluttered or inefficient, they commonly experience symptoms of bloating, congestion, inflammation and poor digestion, all of which can lead to more serious health conditions. When people clear their clutter, discard unnecessary items and “detox” their surroundings, the spaciousness and resulting efficiency they create can offer more energy in addition to improved digestion, detoxification and overall vitality.

Tangled Roots Of Disorganization

A disorganized, cluttered or messy environment can be caused by a number of factors, including environmental conditions; lack of ability, space or time; and illness. When disorganization becomes overwhelming, it can cause significant stress on a number of levels: mental, emotional and physical. Mentally, disorganization in your physical environment can create feelings of exhaustion, fatigue, frustration, anger, anxiety, depression and chronic stress. On a physical level, when disorganization heightens stress and anxiety levels, your heart rate, blood pressure and cholesterol levels all increase. That contributes to heart disease, digestive problems, sleep problems, obesity, autoimmune diseases and other serious issues.

In addition, the clutter in our environment can create an abundance of mold, bacteria and other toxins, which can cause inflammation, respiratory conditions and toxic buildup in your body. To avoid or alleviate these conditions, we first need to create a space that allows for healthy living before we move forward with a gentle whole-body detox program.

Physical Organization For Mental Clarity

The first step in organizing for better health is clearing out what isn’t needed — a home detox, so to speak. Take small, daily steps to clean and organize. You will provide the space to engage in stress-management activities, such as yoga, meditation and others; and you will feel a sense of satisfaction once the project is complete. Studies show that mild to moderate exercise in the form of housework boosts mental health, reduces stress and anxiety, and promotes healthy circulation.

These efforts carry over to other areas of life as well, such as diet and eating habits. That’s because good organization allows for more time and energy to plan and prepare high-quality meals to feed our bodies with the proper nutrients for optimal health.

Tangible Health Benefits

Once they become better organized, my patients most commonly report one of the most important aspects of a successful detoxification program: the emotional process of letting go. Organization of our external environment leads to better clarity, efficiency and less energy consumption on all levels of our being: physical, mental and emotional. From an integrative medicine perspective, these three levels are inseparable.

With better clarity and organization, all aspects of life and health flow more smoothly with less congestion. On a physical level, strong organization means better blood flow and less inflammation, less hyperviscosity and less oxidative stress from harmful free radicals. The right nutrients are delivered to the right places in the body; and we have better antioxidant protection, which helps beat every chronic condition, including cancer, diabetes cardiovascular disease and depression. When we are clearer and more efficient, our energy lasts much longer and our health can benefit on all levels. This process paves the way for a more comprehensive whole-body detoxification and rejuvenation program.

Overall, a simplified, organized life allows you to focus on what is really important to you. You are able to clarify the bigger picture of your life, spend more quality time with the people you love and accomplish greater goals in a more creative and meaningful environment.
