Reduce Your Risk Of Dying From Cancer

Cancer is widespread in the U.S.: Almost 20 million Americans have been diagnosed with a form of the disease. But research at Loyola shows how you can reduce your risk of an early death from this affliction.

A 15-year study of more than a thousand men shows that exercise can prolong the lives of folks who have cancer. In this research, the men who exercised the most had a 49 percent reduced risk of dying during the study compared to those who engaged in the least amount of physical activity.

The sedentary men in the Loyola research burned less than 2,100 calories a week in physical activity. The most frequent exercisers, who generally lived the longest, burned more than 12,600 calories weekly. A man who weighs about 175 pounds can burn 12,600 weekly calories by walking briskly for an hour and a half daily.

The scientists conclude that: “Thus physical activity should be actively promoted (by healthcare providers) to such individuals (with cancer) to enhance longevity.”
