Study Uncovers New Potential Benefit Of Pomegranate Juice

Study uncovers new potential benefit of pomegranate juiceCancer metastasis is one of the most feared aspects of the disease, and many patients live in its shadow even after receiving a clean bill of health. Fortunately, recent studies are showing that there are natural — even delicious — ways to to lower the risk of cancer recurrence.

In fact, researchers from University of California, Riverside have conducted experiments, which showed that compounds found in pomegranate juice may inhibit the movement of prostate cancer cells and lower their sensitivity to a chemical signal that induces metastasis to the bone.

"Having identified them, we can now modify cancer-inhibiting components in pomegranate juice to improve their functions and make them more effective in preventing [this type of] metastasis," said Manuela Martins-Green, a professor of cell biology, whose lab conducted the study.

She added that this may result in better therapies down the road.

The results were presented on Dec. 12 at the 50th annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in Philadelphia.

Pomegranate juice has previously gained popularity among some healthcare professionals and individuals interested in a healthy lifestyle for its apparent heart health benefits.
