The Rock Stars Who Die Youngest

the-rock-stars-that-die-youngest_300If you’re dying to be a famous rock star, medical researchers have a special warning for you: Certain superstars are twice as likely to die young as others. And they warn against the career path that is most often fatal.

According to a study at the Centre for Public Health, University of Liverpool, in England, successful singers who are solo acts are twice as likely to die at an early age as musicians who sing and play in bands. In addition, those who overdose on drugs and alcohol are more likely to have suffered through difficult and abusive childhoods.

The researchers looked at the lives and health of performers over a 50-year period. The research included almost 1,500 rock and pop stars, beginning in 1956 with Elvis Presley and extending to 2006, including The Arctic Monkeys, Regina Spektor and Snow Patrol.

During those 50 years, 137 (9.2 percent) of the famous rock/pop stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.
