Strong evidence shows that a diet filled with a variety of plant foods helps reduce the risk of many cancers. For starters, plant foods are low in fat. Studies show that body fat increases the risk of many cancers. In addition, plant foods are rich in phytonutrients, which are naturally occurring protective chemicals. Many phytonutrients have been linked with lower cancer risk including lycopene (tomatoes), ellagic acid (berries), and flavonoids (green tea).
