Cut your risk of high blood pressure today

More than 75 million Americans have high blood pressure, a condition that increases your chances of heart attack and stroke. An international study of 136,000 people shows how you can cut your danger of this condition, starting today.

You have to do about a half hour of exercise.

The research examined the blood pressure of people in the U.S., Asia and Europe and found that those who exercise for four hours a week enjoy a 19 percent reduced risk of high blood pressure. Even those who exercise only one to three hours weekly are still 11 percent less likely to get hypertension.

“Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease — thus, it is important to prevent and control hypertension,” said researcher Wei Ma, M.D., an associate professor at the Shandong University School of Public Health in Jinan, China. “To try to lower your risk of high blood pressure, you should exercise more in your leisure time.”
