Though it may not be the first thing on your mind, if you are a mother with a new baby, there’s a relatively simple way to lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
All you have to do is breastfeed your infant — the longer, the better.
Researchers have found that mothers who breastfeed increase their insulin tolerance (it’s impaired by pregnancy) and that their improved tolerance seems to be a factor that reduces their chances of later developing Alzheimer’s. The research, carried out on 81 British women, demonstrates that the more you breastfeed, the greater the risk reduction.
The scientists also think that breastfeeding may reduce the body’s supply of the hormone progesterone. Cutting down on progesterone increases the brain’s sensitivity to estrogen, a hormonal interaction that protects against Alzheimer’s.
