Don’t Work During The Cancer Hours

What are the hours you are at work? Canadian research shows that men who work during one particularly risky time of day run an increased risk for cancer of the prostate, colon, lung, bladder, rectum and pancreas as well as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Research at Centre INRS–Institut Armand-Frappier and Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal shows that working at night may up your risk of a whole list of cancers.

“Exposure to light at night can lead to a reduced production of the sleep hormone melatonin, inducing physiological changes that may provoke the development of tumors. This hormone, habitually released in the middle of the night in response to absence of light, plays a pivotal role in hormonal functions and in the immune system,” says researcher Professor Marie-Élise.

In this study, the Canadian scientists focused on data from research that ran from 1970 to 1985. That examination of people’s working hours involved more than 3,100 people ages 35 to 70 years who had developed cancer. The lifestyle habits of those cancer victims were compared to the circumstances of more 500 people who were cancer-free.
