If you’re hooked on smoking your chance of diabetes climbs by 30 to 40 percent. But if you have diabetes and smoke, there’s a new difficulty researchers have discovered that you have to cope with if you attempt to abstain from cigarettes.

If you’re trying to give up smoking, more power to you. This habit is very tough to shake though it’s worth the effort. However, when you get serious about quitting cigarettes, you have to be ready for some tougher times dealing with your blood sugar.

Even though not smoking will at some point make it easier to control your blood sugar levels when you have diabetes, a study at Coventry University in England shows that at first, when you stop smoking, it becomes harder to keep your blood sugar at a safe level.

According to researcher Deborah Lycett: “Knowing that deterioration in blood glucose control occurs around the time of stopping smoking helps to prepare those with diabetes and their clinicians to be proactive in tightening their glycemic control during this time.”

Eventually, not smoking will improve your resiliency against diabetes.

“Stopping smoking is crucial for preventing complications that lead to early death in those with diabetes. So people with diabetes should continue to make every effort to stop smoking, and at the same time they should expect to take extra care to keep their blood glucose well controlled and maximize the benefits of smoking cessation.”

Smoking is bad for anyone’s health. But for those with diabetes it is most urgent need to avoid this habit.
