Yerba mate Tea May Benefit Colon Health

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the U.S. If caught in the early stages, however, the illness is very treatable, and researchers are learning new ways to combat the condition. For example, scientists from the University of Illinois (UI) recently discovered that compounds in yerba mate tea may effectively kill colon cancer cells.

The researchers found that yerba mate, which is commonly consumed in South America, contains bioactive compounds that causes cancer cells to self-destruct. Furthermore, these substances also appear to reduce inflammation markers, which is important because these markers trigger cancer progression.

While the research is still ongoing, the scientists believe that individuals may want to consider developing a taste for this beverage.

“We believe there’s ample evidence to support drinking mate tea for its bioactive benefits, especially if you have reason to be concerned about colon cancer. Yerba mate tea bags are available in health food stores and are increasingly available in large supermarkets,” said Elvira de Mejia, a UI associate professor of food chemistry and food toxicology.
