supplement-for-a-better-brain_300A supplement made from oysters, beef and soy has been proven to improve mental powers and slow down memory loss. Plus, researchers say, it improves the functions of genes that, when they falter, make you susceptible to degenerative brains disorders like Parkinson’s disease.

The supplement, a natural substance called phosphatidylserine, incorporates a molecule essential for transmitting signals between the brain’s nerve cells. When researchers at Tel Aviv University applied phosphatidylserine to the cells of people suffering Familial Dysautonomia (a nervous system disorder), they found the cells began producing proteins that improve brain function.

Lab experiments show that phosphatidylserine produces this same effect in functioning brains.

“That we see such an effect on the brain — the most important organ in relation to this disease — shows that the supplement can pass through the blood-brain barrier even when administered orally, and accumulate in sufficient amounts in the brain,” says researcher Gil Ast.
