the-bacteria-that-can-save-your-life_300When it comes to germs, doctors used to think that the only good bacteria were dead bacteria. But now researchers find that certain bacteria can save your life.

A study in Europe demonstrates a important link between having a rich environment of varied probiotic (good) bacteria in your intestines and avoiding heart disease and diabetes when you gain weight. The scientists found that folks with fewer types of bacterial species potentially are more likely to get sick and die than those with a greater variety.

“This is an amazing result with possibly enormous implications for the treatment and even prevention of the greatest public health issue of our time,” says researcher Jeroen Raes. “But we are not there yet, now we need studies in which we can monitor people for a longer period. We want to perform these types of long-term studies together with the ‘Vlaams Darmflora Project’ (Flemish Gut Flora Project), which is only possible thanks to the selfless efforts of thousands of Flemish residents.”
