What do you think of when you hear the words “detox” or “cleanse”? If you think of extreme hunger, fatigue, invasive procedures and endless trips to the bathroom, it’s likely that you or someone you know has experienced a dreaded detox crisis. Sadly, people often feel worse on a “quick-fix” cleanse, with symptoms that are aggravated rather than improved. Many believe this process to be an inevitable aspect of any detoxification program where you must temporarily feel worse before feeling better.
Detox Without Side Effects
In my practice, patients — even some with advanced diseases — successfully undergo detoxification without side effects of fatigue, hunger, headaches, digestive issues, etc. In fact, the right detox program can help you feel your best, with more energy, vitality, happiness and multiple long-term health benefits. These programs can be gentle, yet powerful, and relatively easy to follow.
One of the first steps is to gently cleanse the digestive and circulatory systems first with a whole-food, alkalizing diet and gentle, effective detox supplements. Then you can add in more targeted ingredients and therapies for enhanced toxin removal from organs and tissues — without uncomfortable reactions. This process is best achieved over a period of a month or more, in order to give your body time to remove accumulated toxins gradually. This makes all the difference for minimizing uncomfortable reactions.
For long-term health, there is no such thing as a “quick fix.”
Diet: Nourishing And Whole
Our fast-paced lifestyles and Western diets — emphasizing processed food, commercial meats, caffeine, alcohol and unhealthy fats — can be highly acid-forming. Many chronic and degenerative conditions are related to an overly acidic internal environment.
Increasing alkalinity by reducing stress and following a nutrient-dense, mostly alkaline diet greatly enhances natural detoxification capacities. Vegetables such as greens, cruciferous vegetables, avocados, artichokes and sea veggies are all great examples of cleansing, as well as alkalizing, foods. Microalgae like spirulina and chlorella help stave off hunger and provide excellent nutritional and detoxification support. High-fiber foods like soaked chia and flax seeds help cleanse the GI tract and support overall health. Animal protein can be consumed in smaller amounts during a gentle cleanse, but it should come from high-quality sources like free range organic turkey and wild salmon. Avoid processed and non-organic meats, dairy products, processed foods, gluten, sugar, trans-fats and alcohol during your cleanse.
Caffeine should also be gradually cut out for a thorough detox, and this may be the hardest part for many people. However, it can be done successfully with minimal withdrawal symptoms by replacing high-caffeine beverages with lower-caffeine ones (like switching from coffee to lightly steeped green tea) and then weaning off over a period of one to two weeks. Natural remedies that may assist with caffeine withdrawal include topical magnesium, yoga practice and right nostril breathing — the subject of numerous studies.
Also, be sure you are hydrating adequately. One of the biggest causes of cleanse discomfort is dehydration, which impairs the body’s normal functions. Drink at least 64 ounces of pure water and herbal teas to help flush toxins, reduce inflammation and keep the body’s systems running smoothly.
One of the safest and most effective ways to remove toxins and heavy metals from the circulation system is to use a clinically proven blend of modified citrus pectin (MCP) and modified alginates for at least a month in conjunction with a nutrient-dense, whole-food diet.
After this initial period, you can add in a Phase Two detox formula containing herbs and nutraceuticals like dandelion, milk thistle, NAC and glutathione, which bind and remove heavy metals and toxins from deep within organs and tissues. By adding the Phase Two formula later, you give your body time to prepare for more in-depth removal of toxins from organs and tissues. This second phase formula also supports the organs of elimination such as liver, skin and kidneys, provides antioxidant protection and supports vital energy — all essential components of a successful cleanse.
Another critical part of any detox therapy is to ensure that your digestive system has the support it needs. By providing extra vitality and “warmth” with specific herbs, spices, enzymes and nutrients, you can enhance nutrient breakdown and elimination and support immune function, which is directly influenced by the digestive environment. Ingredients like plant-based digestive enzymes and herbs such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and galangal gently boost sluggish digestion, reduce harmful bacteria and relieve bloating, nausea, gas, fluid retention and indigestion. This is critical during a cleanse, where digestive capacity needs to function at its best in order to ensure proper elimination of toxins and complete nutrient assimilation.
Medicinal mushrooms are unique in that they have an affinity for specific areas within the body that have been damaged from overexposure to toxins, prescription medications and other health-robbing substances. In the way that fungi in nature have an affinity for materials that are decaying, medicinal mushrooms travel to dead and damaged areas of the body and work to rejuvenate them. In that way they are great allies during a cleanse. They can help remove toxins from organs and tissues where these chemicals may have been stored for years.
Mushrooms help prime the immune system and also cleanse the liver, colon and overall system of accumulated toxins, bacteria and other pathogens. A comprehensive medicinal mushroom formula is highly recommended for removing toxins from stagnant areas of the body. Many mushrooms have an affinity for deeper areas of toxicity within various organs and systems in the body, and they provide a significant and noticeable boost to the immune system and overall vitality. Some top recommended species include reishi, tremella, cordyceps, coriolus, maitake and oyster.
Prebiotics And Probiotics
One of the goals of cleansing and detoxifying is to rid the intestines of harmful bacteria, fungi and parasites. Replanting and nourishing beneficial bacteria in the GI tract with prebiotics and probiotics significantly helps reduce the presence of harmful invaders and improve the overall environment in your gut, leading to increased digestive capacity and overall vitality. Recent studies have shown that probiotics directly enhance immune function as well as the brain’s neurotransmitter activity. They are truly “friendly flora.”
Lemon And Olive Oil Drink: A Simple, Yet Powerful, Detox Therapy
One of my favorite cleansing adjuncts is the classic lemon and olive oil drink. It is simple, inexpensive and easy to prepare; and it offers a dramatic boost to any cleanse program by providing support to the liver and gallbladder.
Take the pieces of one organic lemon (seeds removed) and blend with about 1.25 cups of filtered water, along with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Strain the contents and drink each night before bed on an empty stomach. As an added bonus, many people find that that this refreshing drink improves their sleep as well.
Treatments And Exercises
It is critical to keep things moving during a cleanse so that toxins (and negative mental/emotional states) that are in the process of being eliminated do not get stuck and create further stagnation. It’s critical to engage in mild to moderate exercise, even just 20 to 30 minutes of walking, every day.
In addition, specific treatments that promote the movement of vital energy within the body can be very helpful in deepening and enhancing the clearing process. Acupuncture, lymphatic drainage massage, microcurrent therapy, homeopathic treatments, infrared saunas, yoga, qigong and breathing exercises are some of my top recommended modalities for ensuring the movement of vital energy within the body to support natural detoxification processes.
What About Colonics?
Many people recommend colonics and enemas during a cleanse, as a way to assist the large intestines with elimination. While these therapies may be beneficial for some people (many certainly swear by them), it’s important to remember that this method of detoxification represents one small aspect of a total body cleanse and not the most important one.
A well-planned cleanse can be equally, if not more, successful in helping to rid the GI tract of excess wastes and toxins than simply receiving a regular schedule of colonics or enemas. That’s because these bowel treatments may offer some immediate relief from constipation and buildup, but do not address the underlying causes of stagnant bowels or toxic body burden.
A successful cleanse uses herbs and nutrients along with proper diet and exercises to help rebalance the body’s innate detoxification processes safely and naturally. You know your program is working when you feel a resurgence of energy, enthusiasm and overall zest for life!
