Vitamins Protect Bones

If you’re worried about the strength of your bones, taking a B vitamin may lower your risk of breaking them. A study of stroke patients, who are two to four times more likely to break their hips than other people, shows that those taking the B vitamins folate and B12 suffered only about one-fifth the number of broken hips compared to stroke patients who didn’t take vitamins.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, also showed that the patients taking the B vitamins had lower levels of homocysteine in their blood, a sign that their inflammation might have been reduced. Stroke patients who did not take B vitamins had homocysteine levels that increased by more than 30 percent.
