When A Knee Brace Is Worthless

If you’ve recently had knee surgery to repair your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), any knee brace your doctor may have given you to wear is worthless. An analysis of more than two dozen studies demonstrates that wearing a knee brace has no recovery benefits after ACL repair.

Instead of wearing a knee brace, special exercises to increase your strength and range of motion have been shown to be worthwhile.

“The most important thing for ACL surgery patients is to start physical therapy early and rigorously,” says Rick W. Wright, M.D. “It can be difficult at first, but it’s worth it in terms of returning to sports and other activities.”
