Angina is chest pain linked to blocked arteries. When the heart is deprived of blood because of these blockages, your pain can be severe. And if you belong to one particularly unlucky group of angina-afflicted people, you run a triple risk of dying from heart disease
The group in danger, according to the study published in the Journal of Women’s Health, consists of black women with angina. They are three times as likely to die of cardiovascular complications as white women with this type of pain.
“These results indicate that we need to raise awareness among women and their healthcare providers of racial differences in anginal symptom presentation in order to improve both diagnosis and outcomes,” says Susan G. Kornstein, M.D., editor-in-chief of Journal of Women’s Health.
