1. Aspergillus

This mold is extremely common. It’s found in air conditioning vents, soil, decaying plant debris, compost piles and stored grain. Indoors, it grows on surfaces like leather, building materials and even clothing, depending on the amount of moisture present.

Aspergillus is an allergenic mold. Exposure can cause asthma attacks, lung infections and respiratory inflammation. People with weakened immune systems can get Aspergillosis, a group of diseases that includes fungal sinusitis, nail fungus and keratitis (eye infection).

Some species of aspergillus are toxigenic and can produce aflatoxins, a known and deadly carcinogen.
