The power of positive affirmations

Affirmations are statements that affect your conscious and subconscious mind.

Affirmations are a powerful way to move towards evolution of self and can be used as a crucial tool during the New Year, when goals and changes are made.

But this poses an important question: Do positive affirmations and positive thoughts really work? Can you help cure health issues simply by affirming yourself to be healthy and whole?

Well, certainly, having a positive outlook can alter your perception of reality which can be beneficial — but does it actually alter reality?

Not always, and here’s why…

When we make an affirmation, we generate a positive thought, but unfortunately it often doesn’t result in a real difference. More often than not, the thought is generated in a contrived way, and is not genuine. For instance, you might tell yourself that “you are healthy and happy”, but deep down, you might not really believe it.

Often, our positive thoughts are just a few thin layers covering a multitude of suppressed negative beliefs generated by fear, aversion, attachments and the like.

These negative beliefs can be both conscious and unconscious, but regardless of their specific location in our psyche, they are clearly the obstructing force in any real effect of positive affirmation on our reality.

Which leads to the conclusion that, Yes, positive affirmations do work, but only to the degree that they are truly genuine — that you generate them and sustain your belief in them from the deepest core of your being possible. This means being in touch with yourself, experiencing the true potential of your existence, and then being genuine to that experience.

Clearing the path for your affirmations

Through regular meditation and quieting of the mind, you can start to peel away layers of doubts and distractions and open your heart to a sense of well-being.

Essentially, this is the gateway to effective guided mental imagery, positive affirmations and other mind-body practices, allowing us to generate authentic positive thoughts and feelings that can result in concrete positive changes, including greater healing capacity and attainment of goals.

So in order to experience your positive affirmations in an effective and meaningful way, try this exercise:

  1. Allow yourself to relax. Certain positions like lying down or sitting with the back straight are useful, together with breathing slowly and turning attention inward to the breath.
  2. Create an opening in awareness. Shift to a greater field of perception and recognize that everything around us and inside us is constantly changing; nothing is permanent.
  3. Focus on whatever mental imagery you choose, in a clear, vivid, but transparent way. (You still hold awareness of your surroundings.) Allow the image to strengthen and imagine the positive outcome.

With the right training and practice, you can repeat these visualizations while you do your daily activities. This can be more easily achieved by initially practicing with opened eyes.

So, start the New Year with a new, clear and confident mind through positive affirmations. They can help you in all aspects of your life, and give you the strength to stay positive throughout the year!
