10 baking soda uses for health, house and hygiene

Take a look in your refrigerator. That’s right, all the way in the back…

There’s probably a little yellow box sitting there, absorbing all the nasty odors and keeping things smelling fresh.

That same box is probably sitting in your pantry next to the flour and sugar. If you’re in the know, it might even be in your bathroom, right alongside your toothbrush.

The white powder in that box isn’t a miracle cure, but it has more amazing uses than most people realize. Definitely more than just baking cakes and getting rid of bad smells.

Before telling you about all the amazing things it can do, let’s make sure you know exactly what that stuff in the yellow box IS.

Peak Organic Alkalizing Greens

At birth your body’s pH is balanced. But starting immediately acid waste builds up and starts to shift your pH level from healthy alkaline to unhealthy acid. If your body is too acidic it provides the right terrain for germs to thrive. To add insult to injury… MORE⟩⟩

What exactly is baking soda?

Baking soda goes by the names sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda and sodium hydrogen bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate is an alkalizing substance, which explains most of the health benefits it offers. In order to reduce chronic inflammation and pain, we want our bodies to be in an alkaline state most of the time.

My colleague, Dr. Bob Livingston, explains just how sodium bicarbonate helps move your body from an acidic state to an alkaline one, and why this is so important to your health.

5 health benefits of bicarbonate

1. Bicarbonate boosts kidney health. Your lungs work to remove acid from your body in the form of carbon dioxide. When they can’t handle the acid load, your kidneys are the “backup plan.”

When things go well, your kidneys eliminate acid through your urine. Metabolic acidosis occurs when there’s too much acid for your kidneys to handle. Over time, chronic kidney disease can develop.

Research has shown that supplementing with baking soda (bicarbonate) can slow the progress of chronic kidney disease.

2. Bicarbonate can alleviate urinary tract infections. In a recently published study, 33 female patients with urinary tract infections took baking soda orally for four weeks. This turned their urine from acidic to alkaline, and researchers saw “a significant level of positive effects on symptoms and symptom scores.”

3. Bicarbonate is antifungal and antibacterial. Baking soda has been proven effective against fungus and yeasts that cause skin and nail infections.

4. Bicarbonate relieves heartburn. If you’ve ever taken Alka-Seltzer, you’ve been taking sodium bicarbonate. Simply dissolving a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of cold water will have the same effect.

6 helpful uses for baking soda

Not only can baking soda be used for better health, but it can also be a chemical-free, fragrance-free substitute for other products you’re using…

1. Soothes and protects feet. A tablespoon in warm water will soothe tired feet, remove bacteria and odors, and prevent toenail fungus.

2. Cleans your hair. That’s right! Add a teaspoon to your shampoo and wash as usual. Baking soda will remove the residue that commercial shampoos leave behind.

I’ve been using baking soda as an all-around cleaning substitute for harsh chemical cleansers.

3. Natural kitchen scrub. Add a few drops of lemon, rosemary or peppermint essential oil to a handful of baking soda and clean your kitchen counters with it. Just go back and rinse off any residue. Your kitchen will smell naturally clean!

4. Fruit and veggie scrub. A paste of baking soda and water will remove bacteria from your produce.

5. Drain cleaner. Eliminate that smell in your garbage disposal unit by mixing baking soda and vinegar and letting it bubble in the drain for 15 minutes. Rinse with hot water. A really effective and healthy alternative to harsh chemicals used to clean drains!

6. Coffee pot cleaner. If you love good coffee, you’ll want to try this one. To remove coffee stains and that old coffee taste from your pot, mix ¼ cup baking soda with a quart of warm water. Rub the mixture in your pot. If there are tough stains, let it sit for a few hours before you rinse.
