10 ways coconut oil brings out your natural beauty
I’m guessing you’ve heard about the amazing health benefits of coconut oil.
And if you’ve taken what you’ve heard seriously, you’re probably already cooking with it, baking with it and more.
But if you haven’t added it to your beauty regime yet, you’re missing out on some of it’s best benefits.
Coconut oil is a must-have beauty staple for anyone who hates spending loads of money on beauty products that are filled with questionable chemicals and additives.
Here are a few simple ways you can use coconut oil to bring out your natural beauty:
- Night cream: You can use pure virgin coconut oil in place of your usual night cream. If you already have oily skin it may be too much for you. But it’s exactly what you need to restore that youthful, moisture-rich glow if your skin is on the dry-side. You can also use it as an eye cream to reduce the look of under eye circles and fine lines.
- Body moisturizer: Like with the night cream, you can also use the oil in its pure and natural form as a body moisturizer. It’s especially soothing on rough elbows, knees and heels.
- Shaving cream: Just rub a small amount of coconut oil on your legs and shave. Since it’s a natural antibacterial, it has the added benefit of protecting your skin from razor burn. I tried this one myself recently and boy does it make your legs smooth. But be careful, it also makes your shower floor slick.
- Eye makeup remover: I don’t often buy makeup remover, so this trick has come in handy for me more than once. It’s especially useful when you’re wearing more make-up than usual for a wedding or special occasion. Just put a dab of coconut oil on a cotton swab or tissue and rub it over your eyes. You’ll be amazed how quickly and easily the oil wipes them clean. And you’ll get the added bonus of having really soft eyelids afterward.
- Deep conditioner: If your hair is feeling dry and frizzy, a deep conditioning treatment with coconut oil is exactly what the doctor ordered. Before bedtime, put about a tablespoon of coconut oil in your hair and comb it through evenly. Then put your hair up in a loose, messy bun and cover it with a shower cap to protect your pillow. You can also put a towel on your pillow if you don’t have a shower cap handy. In the morning, wash the oil out with your favorite shampoo.
- Lip balm: Coconut oil lip balm is a lifesaver if you have perpetually parched lips. All you need to do is find a small jar or container with a good lid and fill it with a scoop full of coconut oil. You can put it in your purse and use it throughout your day by applying a little bit on your lips with your finger. Just make sure the lid is on tight so the oil doesn’t seep out.
- Body scrub: You’ll be amazed how simple it is to make a skin-smoothing body scrub with coconut oil. All you really need are two ingredients: coconut oil and salt or brown sugar. Just take a ½ cup of the oil and melt it over low heat on the stove. Then add 1 cup of brown sugar or salt and stir it until it’s well-mixed. You can even add your favorite essential oil if you want to give it a pleasant aroma. Although, I think the natural aroma of coconut oil is pretty pleasant already.
- Cheekbone highlighter: Adding a subtle glow to your cheekbones is a great way to bring out your natural beauty. But forget the expensive highlighters you see in the cosmetic department. Coconut oil can do the job just as well. Lightly dab a very small amount on your cheekbones over your makeup. But don’t overdo it, or your face will look oily.
- Breath freshener: Oil pulling is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of swishing oil around in your mouth. It’s great for the health of your teeth and gums… and it’s also an effective way to freshen your breath. Originally, in ancient India, people used sesame oil for oil pulling. But nowadays, the oil-of-choice is coconut oil because of its powerful anti-bacterial properties. Just put a small spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and let it melt. Once it melts, swish it around for 20 minutes. When your time’s up, spit it out in a cup and throw it in the garbage (don’t spit it in the sink, or it will clog your pipes). Then give your teeth a good brushing, and you’ll have the freshest breath on the block.
- Cuticle moisturizer: Dry cuticles are no match for coconut oil. Just take a small dab and rub it over your cuticles nail beds. You can even take a small jarful with you on-the-go and it can double as a lip balm.
Truthfully, this list could go on for days. There are just as many ways to enhance your beauty with coconut oil as there are to enhance your health. So go out and grab another jar. You’re going to need it.
