5 ‘health foods’ that can backfire

Tuna

A certain well-known subway sandwich chain caught a lot of flak a while back because most of its sandwiches were so high in sodium and calories. But one, a tuna sandwich, got kudos for being the healthier choice.

That’s not surprising since tuna packs plenty of protein and lots of heart- and brain-healthy omega-3 fats. But it also contains mercury.

The problem? Everyone’s favorite, albacore, is a really big fish. This means it takes in a lot of mercury while swimming and eating and living in toxic waters.

According to the Environmental Defense Fund all that canned white tuna we love is albacore, and its mercury levels are almost three times higher than the smaller skipjack tuna, used in most “light” tuna products.

So if you enjoy tuna, avoid albacore by going for light tuna, and still only eat it in moderation.
