7 unusual signs of lung cancer

Swelling of the face

Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome

The superior vena cava is a large vein that carries blood from the head and arms, back to the heart. It passes right next to the upper lung, so if tumors are present and press on the SVC, blood will back up in the veins.

SVC syndrome can develop slowly, or it can quickly become life-threatening. Swelling of the face, neck, arms and upper chest, along with bluish-red skin color, are signs to look for.
