The ‘pleasure therapy’ that improves your sleep, bladder, heart and more

The human body is a wondrous thing. There are so many moving parts and so many things we’ve yet to understand about how it works.

We’ve looked deep into the human body, and the mind, for answers to our most puzzling health problems.

Yet there’s one thing that we’ve been hesitant to talk about…

While men and women alike have been conditioned to be uncomfortable with this topic, it deserves our attention, since it holds the key to some major health benefits. We’d actually be remiss if we didn’t talk about it.

The “M” word

Masturbation. There, we’ve said it. It’s a normal part of healthy sexual development. Babies do it while they’re still in the womb.

And, as a normal part of our bodily functions, it’s not surprising that we’re finding out more and more about how it can improve health and fight off disease.

Of course, like eating whole foods, avoiding toxins, or drinking more water (all healthy habits), how you choose to apply this information — or not — is up to you. But it’s time we put the myths aside and talk about the facts…

Peak Bladder Support

For women, age, childbirth, menopause and hormone fluctuations take a toll on healthy urinary function. For men, an aging body may result in the need for bladder support. Whatever the cause, occasional urinary urgency can… MORE⟩⟩

5 benefits for women

Masturbation helps prevent cervical infections and relieves urinary tract infections. Studies show that, when women masturbate, a process called “tenting” occurs. It’s the opening of the cervix that occurs as part of the arousal response.

Tenting stretches the cervix, and the cervical mucous, which allows cervical fluids and the bacteria they carry to be flushed out.

Masturbation is associated with better cardiovascular health and a lower risk of type-2 diabetes. In several studies, women who experienced more orgasms were found to have greater resistance to both coronary heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

Masturbation releases hormones that improve sleep and prevent insomnia. The hormone dopamine is released during sexual arousal. Dopamine relaxes and calms the body. After climax, oxytocin and endorphins are released. These hormones further calm the body and help make you sleepy.

Masturbation can improve bladder control. Incontinence will affect about 30 percent of women at some point in their lives. When the pelvic floor muscles contract during orgasm, they’re strengthened, improving bladder control.

Masturbation can help control pain. According to Dr. Barry Komisaruk, a professor at Rutgers University, “… vaginal stimulation can block chronic back and leg pain, and many women have told us that genital self-stimulation can reduce menstrual cramps, arthritic pain, and in some cases even headache.”

Peak Maximum Endurance

At middle age, you start feeling changes in your body you may chalk up to aging: energy levels hit rock bottom, weight soars, muscles become soft, skin becomes wrinkled and slack and desire tanks. You may feel past your prime — but science says that’s wrong! MORE⟩⟩

Men can benefit as well

Masturbation may make prostate problems less likely. One study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that men who ejaculated frequently were less likely to end up with prostate cancer.

Similar to the tenting process that occurs in the cervix, male masturbation may give the body the ability to flush out potential cancer-causing agents.

For both men and women, masturbating can boost your immune system.

Under extreme stress, cortisol is the hormone that supports the “fight-or-flight” mechanism. People who are under constant stress may suffer immune system malfunctions that come with too much cortisol.

However, the small amounts of cortisol produced during masturbation can actually help regulate and strengthen the immune system. It’s possible that the body treats orgasm as a “stressor,’ and responds with just enough cortisol, but not too much.

And one thing’s for sure, you can put your mind at ease about this one, particularly strong myth: You won’t go blind.
