Is food the best medicine for kidney disease?
More often than not, proper nutrition is the best medicine for whatever ails you. And that seems to be the case for kidney disease.
Kidney disease is common — more than 200,000 people in the U.S have it. That’s because its two main causes are health conditions that also run rampant in our country — diabetes and high blood pressure.
If you have kidney disease you know that it can affect practically every part of your body. It can cause your legs and arms to swell from fluid retention. It can lead to heart disease. It can weaken your bones and cause fractures. It can cause anemia. It can cause seizures. It can even kill you. All because your kidneys aren’t filtering waste from your blood properly.
Kidney disease also affects your pocket book. You have to pay a pretty penny for medications to manage your kidney disease and the health repercussions it causes. You may even need expensive medical procedures like dialysis (where doctors filter the wastes out of your blood artificially) or a kidney transplant.
But if you have kidney disease, there’s a simple solution that can save you a lot of suffering and money…
Eeating more fruits and vegetables
Researchers from Baylor Scott & White Healthcare in Texas found that eating three to four more servings of fruits and vegetables per day helped people with kidney disease lower their blood pressure and cut their medication costs in half.
But do you want to know the best part?
Over the course of the five-year study, the only thing participants changed to produce such amazing results was how much fruits and vegetables they ate. They didn’t eliminate sugar, dairy, gluten or fast food. They didn’t even go out of their way to eat less calories.
They just ate more of the good stuff. And by doing that, they were able to lower their blood pressure significantly and cut medication costs by a whopping $80,000 altogether. It’s a true testament to the power of proper nutrition. But you know what else can help you overcome kidney disease?
Exercise, of course. A review of available research conducted by scientists at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School found that kidney disease patients could significantly lower their blood pressure by regularly doing aerobic exercise and strength training too.
The bottom line? If you eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise, you’ll be well on your way to healthier kidneys. But if you really want to kick your kidneys into high gear you can also try natural remedies like:
- Dandelion
- Parsley juice
- Aloe vera juice
- Cranberry juice
- Apple cider vinegar
