5 kinds of black mold (and where they hide)
2. Penicillium
If you’re thinking that this is where penicillin comes from, you’re absolutely right. But outside the test tube, this is a mold with a heavy, musty odor that is found on building materials, fabrics and on spoiled food.
Some species of penicillium cause asthma and hay fever. Others cause the occupational illness called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, also known as “cheese washer’s lung” because the mold spores grow in cheese casings, and “Woodman’s lung” when they are inhaled from wood pulp or dust.
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an inflammation of the alveoli, the small air sacs within the lung that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the bloodstream.
Some species of penicillium are pathogenic and especially harmful to persons with a compromised immune system.
