Tips for seniors trying yoga for the first time

Before attending a yoga class, there are a few things seniors should know:

  • Invest in a quality yoga mat. Most yoga studios have loaner mats, but buying your own high-quality mat gives you the support and cushion you need to feel comfortable.
  • It’s okay if you can’t do yoga poses as shown. Many older adults start out with chair yoga, then graduate to other poses once they feel comfortable. Some stick with chair yoga and that’s okay too! Even with an adaptive practice, you’ll reap the health benefits of yoga.
  • If you’re worried about the cost of yoga, you may be in luck if you have a Medicare Advantage plan. Aetna and other providers offer MA plans that cover wellness programs, which can include access to a fitness facility that has yoga classes.
  • You can ask for help. If you’re not sure how to adapt a pose to your body, just ask! Yoga instructors are there to guide your body into the poses that are safest and most comfortable for you and can provide props to assist with challenging poses.
