Virtually any medicine you take has to pass through your liver. Some, like anticonvulsants and drugs used in anaesthesia, won’t work at all until your liver activates them.

With any medication, your body must rid itself of any excess amounts it does not need, rather than let them accumulate. Most drugs are fat-soluble, meaning they are difficult to pass in the urine. Enzymes in the liver break them down into water-soluble forms that can be eliminated.
