Once your body stores useful vitamins and minerals from food, your liver breaks down what is left and sends it through your bile or blood to be eliminated through the bowels or urine.

In addition, the liver eliminates bilirubin, the waste product produced when red blood cells break down. Too much bilirubin causes jaundice, easy to recognize by a yellowing of the whites of the eyes.
