Varicose veins

5. Varicose veins

While not technically a skin condition, gnarled, bulging varicose veins are quite unsightly as they appear through the skin. However, their health implications are of far more concern than their appearance.

Varicose veins may cause pain and throbbing in the legs, a sign of an underlying circulatory problem.

Being obese, standing for prolonged periods of time, and a family history of the condition are all risk factors for varicose veins. Some people may develop them during pregnancy.

An injury that causes bleeding from a varicose vein requires immediate attention.

Treatments to help reduce the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins range from compressions stockings to laser treatment, sclerotherapy or ablation to close the vein, and surgical removal of the vein — also known as stripping.
