This skin irritation comes in two varieties: allergic dermatitis, as in a reaction to poison ivy or scented laundry detergent, or irritant dermatitis, which is more like chapped lips or rashes and cracked skin between fingers and toes.

The problem with contact dermatitis is that older skin does not respond as well to the usual treatments. In fact, the treatment itself might cause more irritation. In these cases, prescription medications will most likely be needed to relieve the itching.
