Usually, these are annoying but harmless. If you gulp a drink too quickly, these bursts of air will occur. But if they come out of nowhere, are painful and won’t stop, they could be signals of a stroke.

This happens more often in women than in men, and usually is accompanied by a tinging or numb feeling in the arms and hands, blurred vision, or other more classic signs of stroke.
