More people are choosing this healthcare ‘plan’
If you’ve embraced a natural approach to your health, guess what? You’re not alone. More and more Americans appear to be fed up with conventional medicine and are turning to acupuncture, yoga, chiropractic care and other natural remedies to stay healthy.
Could it be we are growing tired of the same old thing from our doctors… more prescriptions and procedures that seem to just temporarily mask symptoms — instead of working towards wellness from the inside out… or worse — cause dangerous or unpleasant side effects?
It’s hard to say exactly, but a recent government study shows we are willing to invest in natural health care…
According to study author Richard Nahin, lead epidemiologist at the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, “Substantial numbers of Americans spent billions of dollars out-of-pocket on these approaches — an indication that users believe enough in the value of these approaches to pay for them.”
During 2012 alone, Americans looking for natural therapies spent:
- $14.7 billion out-of-pocket on visits to complementary practitioners such as chiropractors, yoga instructors, acupuncturists or massage therapists — nearly 30 percent of what people spent on traditional medical services.
- $12.8 billion on natural product supplements, which was about one-quarter of what people spent on prescription drugs.
- $2.7 billion on books, CDs, videos and other self-help materials related to complementary health.
Overall, spending on complementary medicine amounted to just over nine percent of out-of-pocket health care expenditures and about one percent of all money spent on health care in the United States, the researchers found.
But you know what the best part about natural health care is? Most of it is absolutely free!
Immediate reimbursement
Lifestyle changes will rarely cost you anything at all. And one of the most impressive characteristics of the human body is how fast it responds to changes in lifestyle.
If you’ve been dragging down your wellness by eating meals filled with processed foods and spending a few too many sedentary hours in front of the television, shifting your habits for the better can result in almost immediate reimbursement… and it’s not really as hard as you might think.
For example, just a handful of simple natural health care changes in your exercise habits and diet can boost the health of both your heart and mind.
When scientists at UCLA enrolled a group of people in a natural health care lifestyle program, they saw improvement in just two weeks. The relatively simple program consisted of:
- Doing crossword puzzles and brain teasers to stimulate brain activity.
- Taking daily walks to boost physical fitness.
- Eating five small meals a day to prevent sharp drops in blood sugar.
- Eating a diet containing more omega-3 fats from fish and fish oil.
- Eating more fruits and vegetables with antioxidant nutrients.
- Avoiding high-glycemic foods like white bread, cakes, cookies and other processed foods that spike blood sugar.
- Consuming low-glycemic carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, lentils, sweet potatoes, nuts, spinach, peppers, zucchini, broccoli, cherries, grapefruit, apples, peaches and oranges.
- Controlling stress with daily relaxation exercises like meditation.
Not only can more exercise and a better diet improve your health, doing so makes you feel better pretty quickly. So put down that candy bar, take a walk and pick up an apple for your next snack. You’ll be impressed at how fast your body gets the message — and at how little you had to spend.
Compare that to the high costs of statin drugs… not only the cost to your check book, but the one to your health: Statin drugs can increase your risk of diabetes, zap you of energy, distort your vision, cause muscle weakness (remember — your heart is a muscle!) and increase your cancer risk.
So stick with natural health care, like so many are, and see real, safe and lasting results.
