Need to make an important decision? Take a nap
Are you facing a difficult decision? Maybe you’re thinking of buying a new house, trying to decide whether or not it’s time to retire or if you should take a new job.
Whatever the choice you’re trying to make, a new study has proven that the best way to weigh up the pros and cons, gain insight and make a good decision is not to make a list, ask friends for their opinions or stay up nights thinking about it.
Instead, get back to your childhood, take a break from the world and get in a good old-fashioned nap.
Here’s why…
Improved information processing
The study, led by University of Bristol researchers, aimed to understand whether a short period of sleep can help us process unconscious information and how this might affect our behavior and reaction time.
What they found was that when you take a nap, your brain processes information on a subliminal level including information you might not even know that you’ve been exposed to. In other words, sleep lets you process cues you weren’t even aware of.
So, for example if you’re trying to decide which house to buy, when you’re sleeping your brain could be processing the fact that one house you saw seemed to have foundation problems – even if you didn’t consciously realize it at the time you toured the home.
The researchers also found that sleeping improves the processing speed of that information. This means that when you take a nap, you’re able to more quickly respond the information and make a decision than if you had stayed up worrying about the problem.
According to the researchers, this makes the age-old adage “I’ll sleep on it” scientifically sound advice.
More benefits of napping
And, the improved decision making you get from napping isn’t the only benefit.
#1 – Better memory
Scientific research has also shown that memory is strengthened during sleep. In fact, one study at Saarland University in Germany found that a short nap can improve your memory, recall, and retention of information by a whopping 500 percent. So, if you want to remember where your car keys are, avoid senior moments and preserve your memories, take a short nap each afternoon.
#2 – Lower stress
I think we can all agree that a nap is a great way to lower your stress levels. If you’re feeling tense, take a break, turn off your phone and get some rest.
#3 – Lower heart disease risk
You know those lower stress levels that come with napping that we just talked about? Well, decreased stress comes with the added benefit of a decreased risk of heart disease. And, studies have shown that napping even lowers your blood pressure.
#4 – A happier day
Lack of sleep leads to irritability. So, if you want to boost your mood sneaking in a short nap is a great way to do it.
#5 – Improved nighttime sleep
Weirdly enough, studies show that taking an afternoon nap along with moderate exercise in the evening can help you sleep better at night. Sounds counterintuitive but it works! So, take a nap between 1 and 3 pm and exercise at least two hours before bedtime.
With all of the benefits of napping, it’s no wonder that Winston Churchill once said, “Nature has not intended mankind to work from eight in the morning until midnight without that refreshment of blessed oblivion which, even if it only lasts 20 minutes, is sufficient to renew all the vital forces.”
