The proper way to clean your produce

Did you know that pesticides, poop and people have likely touched your produce?

The Food and Drug Administration recommends all fruits and vegetables be thoroughly washed before they are eaten. But you don’t need an expensive, store-bought wash that simply replaces pesticides with other harsh chemicals. Here’s a do it yourself, Easy Health Options-approved method for getting fruits and veggies safe and ready for consumption.

Step 1: In a clean bowl or sink make a solution of one part white vinegar and three parts room temperature, purified water.

Step 2: Place room temperature produce into the solution and allow them to soak for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Air dry on a clean towel or countertop.

Here are a few other tips to remember when buying and storing produce:

  • Choose produce that is not damaged or bruised.
  • Bag fresh fruits and vegetables separately from meat, poultry and seafood.
  • Keep your refrigerator temperature set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
  • Washing produce before storing may promote bacterial growth and speed up spoilage, so we recommend you wait and wash fruits and vegetables just before you are ready to eat them.
