Rosacea in a glass?

A red, flushed face… sensitive, stinging, dry, itchy or burning skin… large inflamed pores… a thickened or bumpy texture… or even blushing easily when you’re embarrassed.

All of these could be signs that you are one of the 16 million Americans that suffer from rosacea.

Rosacea is a common skin condition, usually affecting the middle area of your face, especially around your nose — leaving your skin looking red, dry and irritated.

And, while doctors still are just guessing at what causes rosacea and how to treat it, a new study is offering one clue on what not to do if you want to avoid the uncomfortable condition…

Before your next chardonnay or cosmopolitan

Researchers at Brown University set out to determine if there was a link between alcohol consumption and rosacea.

They reviewed data collected from over 82,000 women over a 14-year period.

Here’s what they found…

Women who drank alcohol had an elevated risk of developing rosacea, and that risk increased as their alcohol consumption increased.

They even discovered which types of alcohol come with the highest risk of rosacea… white wine and liquor.

That means that when you reach for that glass of chardonnay or a cosmo on Saturday night, you could be increasing your chances of ending up with rosacea.

So, why does it have this affect?

According to the researchers, alcohol’s weakening of the immune system and widening of the blood vessels could contribute to the redness and flushing that occur when you develop the condition.

4 tips for overcoming rosacea

Clearly, if you want to avoid rosacea, avoiding alcohol is one of your first steps.

Other ways to prevent the condition or decrease symptoms include:

  • Remove triggers from your diet – Since food that causes problems in your gut can show up on your skin, removing food triggers from your diet is vital to controlling and preventing rosacea. Common triggers include: caffeine, dairy products, sugar and processed and fried foods. You may also benefit from going gluten-free.
  • Use sunscreen – Since people with fair skin that burn easily are more susceptible to rosacea, it’s important to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun by using a high quality sunscreen every day. In fact, the sun has been rated as one of the most aggravating factors in rosacea flare-ups. But, remember to be careful about the sunscreen you choose.
  • Moisturize – Using moisturizer has been shown to relieve rosacea symptoms and decrease skin sensitivity. Choose a natural moisturizer with its own antibacterial properties, like coconut oil, to avoid the chemicals found in other products that could irritate your skin.
  • Just breathe – Stress is known to trigger rosacea flare-ups, so managing your stress is paramount. Get regular exercise and use meditation and deep breathing techniques to lower your stress levels and calm your skin.

You don’t have to spend your life looking hot, flushed and embarrassed thanks to rosacea. Use the tips above to ward off the condition and prevent and manage flare ups to calm your skin and feel more confident again.
