There are factors that make older adults more likely to develop a drinking problem Life events like retirement and chronic pain can cause us to drink more. At the same time, we absorb and digest alcohol more slowly than when we were younger.

But even regular moderate alcohol intake has been linked to a higher risk of hypertension, heart attack, and stroke. And if you indulge in ten or more drinks per week, research has shown that you’re chopping a year or two off your life expectancy. Eighteen drinks or more per week (about 2 per day) has been linked to four or five years shorter life expectancy.

That’s the difference between living until 75 and living until 80. A big difference.
