If you take an antihistamine every day to avoid seasonal or pet allergies, you might want to reconsider. Research shows that chronic exposure to these over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications can cause weight gain — particularly in women.

One example is cyproheptadine (Periactin), which has been used for this purpose. There are many theories as to why this occurs, but the most reasonable is that histamine is known to reduce the appetite, and antihistamines, therefore, have the opposite effect.
