An ounce of diabetes prevention is worth a pound of coffee?
How many reports have you seen lately about the amazing health benefits of coffee? A lot, right? Well, mainstream medicine has begun to pay attention, too. And you know what that means…
Scientists are trying to take the wonderful natural healing properties of coffee and use them to develop synthetic medicines to treat type 2 diabetes.
Drinking three to four cups of coffee per day, both regular and decaffeinated, has been shown to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. In the latest study, researchers attempted to zero in on what components in coffee are responsible for this anti-diabetes effect.
This is what they found: Two compounds found in coffee, cafestol and caffeic acid, both increased insulin secretion when glucose was added. They also found that cafestol increased glucose uptake in muscles at the same level as a currently prescribed anti-diabetic drug. Researchers say that this knowledge could someday help them develop new medications to better prevent and treat the disease.
However, the scientists speculate there are still undiscovered compounds in coffee that contribute to these positive effects. So something is still eluding them in the lab, but you can find it in your cup. For example, coffee filters eliminate much of the cafestol in drip coffee.
It’s exciting that studies into the health benefits of coffee may result in ways to help people already suffering with type 2 diabetes, but on the other hand it means big pharma will get their hands on something many of us are already enjoying and benefiting from to make a profit.
So the real excitement for you is that you don’t need to wait for a drug. You can use this information about coffee to add to an arsenal of natural ways, including lifestyle and diet changes, to avoid type 2 diabetes in the first place, or to treat existing diabetes. Few doctors would admit it, unless they practice integrative medicine, but that doesn’t require a prescription — just a cup.
