Promote thicker, healthy hair with a ‘scalp facial’

A scalp facial?

If you think it sounds strange, you’re not alone but the results will make you a believer.

You see, the secret to healthier, thicker, more lustrous hair… the hair you had when you were younger, starts at your crown.

Yet, it may be one of the most neglected parts of your body.

TLC for your scalp means healthier hair

By the age of thirty-five two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss and by the age of fifty approximately 85% of men have significant thinning of their hair.

It may surprise you but the statistics for women are much the same. During menopause, four out of ten women will suffer from thinning hair and that number goes up to 80% by the age of 60.

And, according to The Washington Post, American hair loss sufferers spend more than 3.5 billion dollars a year in an attempt to treat their hair loss. Unfortunately, 99% of all products being marketed in the less than ethical hair loss treatment industry are completely ineffective for the majority of those who use them.

You clean, tone, and moisturize your face. You exfoliate to clear away the old, dead skin and allow the new, healthier skin to shine through.

All the while, the delicate skin of your head is crying out for the same treatment. So get to it…

Treat your scalp like you treat your face

If you follow this rule, you could hold onto your healthy, thicker, and younger-looking hair longer…

Always treat the skin of your scalp the same way that you treat your face — exfoliate, moisturize, and cleanse.

With that being said, get serious about giving your scalp the TLC it deserves, starting with:

1. Just like your face sheds dead skin cells, so does the skin on your head. You have to slough these away to make way for newer, healthier cells and clear out the sebum and hair products that can clog pores and stifle hair growth.

The best way to do this is by using a scalp microdermabrasion treatment or shampoo that contains glycolic acid and alpha hydroxyl acids to dissolve oils and break up thick skin build up.

In fact, studies on these natural acids show that they actually cause a “burst of skin exfoliation” — out with the old dead skin cells and in with the new.

There are a number of products out there you can use and the basics are simple.

You just rub it into your scalp and let it sit for about 10 minutes then wash out. It’s recommended that you do a series of 3 exfoliations 4-6 weeks apart for best results. Don’t do it too often because over-exfoliating is not good for your scalp either.

2. The next step is to moisturize. Just like you want healthy, soft skin for your face, your scalp needs moisture too in order to grow that beautiful hair you’re looking for.

An easy option is to use rosehip or argan oil. Just rub a few drops of the oil into your scalp before bedtime. You can shampoo in the morning if you want. These oils feed your scalp the vitamins and fatty acids it needs to stay healthy.

3. Third, you need to regularly cleanse your hair to get rid of product build-up that can clog pores. Use a balancing shampoo once a week that helps remove excess sebum buildup and nourishes your scalp so it has a good foundation for healthier hair.

At first you may notice as much or maybe even a little more hair going down the drain. But after a couple of weeks of rejuvenating your scalp and hair follicles you should see a definite improvement.
