Scientists prove you can vibrate your way to better blood sugar

Basically, the researchers used a mouse model — something that is really common in this type of research since mice closely mimic human conditions like diabetes.

And, they found that whole-body vibration caused some major changes that all added up to improving the way the body uses glucose, including:

1. Boosting macrophage numbers

Inflammation plays a big role in whether or not you end up with diabetes and how bad your blood sugar gets. Yet, the researchers discovered that simply vibrating for 20 minutes a day, five days a week, results in your body producing higher numbers of cells known as macrophages that suppress inflammation.

2. Elevating good gut bacteria

The investigators also found that whole-body vibration has the power to alter your gut microbiome, the collection of microorganisms in your body, that helps protect you from invaders and digest food.

Specifically, they found that vibration increases the level of a bacterium, known as Alistipes, that makes short-chain fatty acids, which can help your body better utilize glucose. In fact, they found that vibration resulted in a 17-fold increase in the number of Alistipes in the gut.

To top off the benefits, the researchers say that this bacterium also works to reduce inflammation, compounding the good you can get from vibrating.

A self-perpetuating loop

And, guess what… there’s more good news. According to the team, it looks like vibration sets off an amazingly beneficial chain reaction.

Put simply, when you vibrate and your number of Alistipes goes up, your glucose use and the macrophage mix improves, which further increases the number of the bacteria.

It’s a self-magnifying cycle! And, this isn’t the first time that researchers have found big benefits from whole-body vibration.

A 2012 study found that in diabetics, vibration reduced ill effects like excessive urine production and thirst and found it to be better than drugs at reducing A1C levels.
