A secret for ‘controlling’ how young you can feel
My grandmother has always been my yardstick for healthy aging. Not only did she live in her own home well into her nineties, her mind was sharp, she cleaned her own house, cooked her own food and regularly made everyone in the family gorgeous quilts.
As she got older, I remember hearing my dad and his brothers and sisters talking about the fact that they felt like they should take over some of the responsibilities for her like paying her bills and doing her shopping.
Do you know what she said?
While pointing her finger at them, she told them, “If I let you handle everything for me, I might as well curl up my toes and die. As long as I’m not in the grave, I’ll do what I can for myself.”
And, she did.
Now, recent research is proving what a smart lady my grandmother really was, and showing that the secret to feeling younger is something you probably didn’t expect…
You’ve got this
The study, by researchers at North Carolina State University decided to look at what factors influence how old people feel and how those factors change as you age. The researchers looked at both older adults (between the ages of 60 and 90) and younger adults (from ages 18 to 36).
Each day for over a week, they had the participants fill out a survey, asking them question to assess their daily stress, physical health, sense of control over their lives and of course, how old they felt.
And, the team found that while how much stress they’re under and how healthy they are plays a significant role in how old younger adults feel, for the over 60 crowd, there was one big factor that took center stage…
A sense of control.
Yep, older people who felt they were in control of their lives also felt younger, regardless of any stress or health concerns they may have been facing.

According to Shevaun Neupert, a professor of psychology at North Carolina State University and co-author of a paper on the work. “This study highlights how those feelings of control influence perceptions of age.
And, he says that although, “Everyone’s sense of control fluctuates from day to day, or even over the course of a day — that’s normal. The more control older adults think they have, the younger they feel. That was true even when accounting for stress and physical health.”
Technology makes it easy to feel “in control’
So, if you want to feel younger, be like my grandmother and take control of as much of your life as you can for as long as possible.
And luckily, that’s easier than ever…
AARP recommends using the explosion of smartphone apps to stay in control since they let you do everything from order a car service to take you to visit friends to having groceries delivered right to your door and managing your finances. It’s also important to note that other research has linked physical activity to feeling younger, thanks to an improved sense of control over your body so getting more exercise is also a great way to go.
However you choose to do it, when you feel more in control of your day-to-day life, you’ll also benefit by feeling younger in it.
