Slow down your stomach to speed up weight loss

Plump, stout, overweight, large, chubby, portly, flabby, paunchy, potbellied, beer-bellied, meaty, heavyset…

All of those are just a long way of saying you may have put on a few to many pounds.

And, while it can seem like you couldn’t even blast the extra weight off with dynamite, there is a simple way to drop those extra pounds without resorting to dangerous diet drugs that give you headaches, dry mouth, constipation and insomnia, or even worse, gastric surgery that can leave you with hernias or even bowel obstructions…

The key is to slow down your stomach

You see, everything you eat or drink is first processed in your stomach and then passes to your small intestine and how long it takes for this to happen can affect how much you eat, how many unnecessary calories you take in and how much you weigh.

Here’s how…

When you eat, the top part of your stomach relaxes and rises, allowing you to feel full and satisfied so that you stop eating.

Your stomach grinds up all of the food particles and then empties slowly into your small bowel.

This emptying normally happens slowly and takes up to four hours, with the bulk of each meal leaving your stomach by two hours.

Liquids, like water, empty fast, while fats and protein-rich foods empty the slowest.

Sugars and carbohydrates, like donuts, potatoes and rice pass quickly.

In other words, if you eat foods containing good fats and high levels of proteins, they stay in your stomach longer than if you eat sweets or carb-rich foods.

And, as a new scientific study has demonstrated, slower stomach emptying can lead to weight loss.

45 percent more pounds lost

Mayo Clinic researchers studied a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, that also decreases the speed of stomach emptying in patients that take it.

The patients in the study were given the drug for a period of three months, resulting in an average weight loss of 12 lbs. — a 45 percent increase in the number of pounds lost compared to the average 6.6 lbs. loss for patients receiving the placebo.

And, according to the researchers, “The degree of stomach emptying delay in study participants was significantly associated with the degree of weight loss.”

In other words, the reason the drug helped people lose weight was because it kept their food in their stomachs’ longer, so they felt full longer.

Eating for a slower stomach

So, how can you use this finding to help in your own battle against the bulge?

The answer is simple: Eat foods that take longer for your stomach to process so that you feel full and satisfied — like the fats and protein-rich foods we talked about above.

These include:

  • Avocados – Avocados are about 77 percent fat, by calories, making them even higher in fat than most animal foods. Half an avocado is considered a single serving size, and they are chock full of benefits.
  • Cheese – Rich in both fats and protein, it takes a cup of milk to make just one thick slice of cheese.
  • Eggs – Offering the protein you need for weight loss, 62 percent of the calories from whole eggs come from fat. It has been shown that eating one egg with breakfast will help to reduce hunger between meal times.
  • Fatty fish – fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines and herring are loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, high quality proteins and all sorts of important nutrients.
  • Nuts – They are high in healthy fats and fiber, and are a good plant-based source of protein.
  • Beans – One-half cup of beans contains as much protein as an ounce of broiled steak. Plus, these nutritious nuggets are loaded with fiber to keep you feeling full for hours. Try Kelley Martin’s three bean salad!
  • White meat (poultry) – Stick to the white meat of poultry for an excellent, lean protein.

Things to avoid or eat in moderation:

  • White foods – These include breads, pastas, rice and potatoes.
  • Sugary foods – It’s no secret that these foods, like ice cream, cookies and donuts can pack on the pounds fast.

So, if you want to use the power of science to lose weight, follow the tips above to slow down your stomach, feel full longer and lose weight.
