The secret to energizing your cells for a long, healthy life

Research has produced some amazing discoveries over the last few years…

Perhaps some of the most extensive and interesting revelations come from our desire to not only live longer but live longer healthier. And it seems scientists are unlocking those secrets…

It comes down to your cellular energy — which comes from your mitochondria. As we age, that energy renewal diminishes greatly. That’s why you’ll see lots of products on the market now, promising to turn back time by prolonging the life of your cells.

But I’ll let you in on a secret: you can power up your mitochondria all on your own…

How long will you live?

Do you know the all-time best predictor of how long you’re going to live?

Your exercise tolerance (how much you can exercise before reaching a state of exhaustion).

And that makes perfect sense because your exercise tolerance increases the more you exercise…

And the more you exercise, the more you reduce your risk for chronic disease.

So basically, exercise is the closest thing you have to a magic wand that grants you better health and longer life.

But why? What’s really going on inside of your body when you’re pounding the pavement, doing downward dog or pumping some iron?

Well, according to a recent study, exercise triggers an amazing response in your cells and muscles that leads to better health and greater longevity…

Power up your cells

Researchers from the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine took a look at how exercise impacts the body on the cellular level. And their findings were impressive…

It turns out, exercise plays a pretty important role in keeping your cells healthy. In fact, it helps revitalize your cells’ powerhouse, the mitochondria.

In their study, researchers found that mice who did aerobic exercise triggered a process called mitophagy in their cells. Mitophagy is a process where your muscles get rid of damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria.

Now, your mitochondria provide energy to your cells and ultimately your entire body. So you only want mitochondria that are operating at full capacity, which is why mitophagy is so important to your health. It ensures that you’re operating with healthy muscle tissue, which researchers say impacts your overall health and lifespan a great deal.

Every cell in the body depends on mitochondria for energy. Together, cells and mitochondria are building blocks for life and health. But mitochondria wear out with age, which leaves cells unable to create the energy they need to function properly… MORE⟩⟩

“Whether muscle is healthy or not really determines whether the entire body is healthy or not,” said Zhen Yan of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. “And exercise capacity, mainly determined by muscle size and function, is the best predictor of mortality in the general population.”

Yan also shared a good analogy for the mitophagy process. He said it’s similar to those mandatory state vehicle inspections we’re subjected to every so often. Those inspections, while a pain in the butt, get damaged or dangerous cars off the streets. So, in the end, they make the streets safer and more efficient for everybody.

The same concept applies to your mitochondria. You want to get those mitochondrial clunkers out of your body, so you stay safe, efficient and healthy.

One more reason to exercise

So there you have it! Another reason exercise is oh-so-important to your health. And why it’s a great way to increase your lifespan.

I’d say this information is the best motivation ever to fit in as much aerobic exercise as you can… who doesn’t want to live longer, after all?

But I know it’s not always easy to exercise more when you only have so many hours in a day. So do your very best to squeeze in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise (like walking, swimming or mowing the lawn) or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, like running or dancing (which has added brain benefits), per week.

If time is an issue, you can fit in more aerobic exercise in less conventional ways too. That will ensure you get enough! Give your house a vigorous cleaning. Go  dancing with your friends instead of out for coffee or dinner. Run errands on your bike instead of in your car. Those little changes go a long way toward healthier cells and a longer life!
