The supplement that cuts down severe asthma attacks

Are you one of the more than 300 million people worldwide who lives with the wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in your chest and difficulty breathing that comes with asthma?

Do you dread catching a cold or other upper respiratory infection because you know that it could make your asthma symptom even worse?

Do you never know when you’re going to end up struggling to take your next breath — or when you could suffer a severe attack that sends you to the emergency room?

If so, I’ve got some good news for you…

According to a new study, adding one simple vitamin into your daily regimen could halve your risk of a severe attack.

Yes, you heard me right — taking one single vitamin could actually cut your risk of having a severe asthma attack that lands you in the emergency room or hospital by 50 percent.

Reduce your chances of needing steroids, injections or hospitalization

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London analyzed the data from over 950 participants in seven randomized controlled trials to determine whether vitamin D supplementation could decrease your risk of suffering from a severe asthma attack.

According to the researchers, they began the study because the sunshine vitamin is thought to protect against asthma attacks by boosting immune responses to respiratory viruses and dampening down harmful airway inflammation.

Here are the results patients with asthma experienced from adding vitamin D into their daily regimens:

  • A 30 percent reduction in the rate of asthma attacks requiring treatment with steroid tablets or injections
  • A 50 percent reduction in the risk of experiencing at least one asthma attack requiring an emergency room visit or hospitalization

That’s right…

Just by taking vitamin D (something that your body needs anyway in order to protect your bones and heart) patients in these seven studies were able to halve their risk of suffering a severe asthma attack that would send them to the ER.

And, the results were even more impressive in people who had low vitamin D levels to start with.

These participants saw a 55 percent reduction in the rate of asthma exacerbations requiring treatment with steroid tablets or injections.

Incredible, right?

Choosing the right vitamin D and how much to take

From these results, it’s obvious that if you suffer from asthma, getting more vitamin D on a daily basis should be at the top of your priority list.

And, since at least 75 percent of people in the U.S. are deficient in the powerful little vitamin, taking a good quality vitamin D supplement could even help you feel better overall.

When choosing a vitamin D supplement, you want to look for vitamin D3 rather than just vitamin D or D2 as well as sticking to a gel cap or liquid to ensure it’s more readily absorbable by your body.

Also, stick to a dose of 5,000 IU per day in order to begin building up your body’s vitamin reserves.

Don’t let a severe asthma attack leave you gasping for air or send you to the hospital. Take a good quality vitamin D supplement to control inflammation in your airways and keep you breathing easy.
