4 powerful reasons to pop some pistachios now (slideshow)

Pistachios for diabetics

3. Pistachios are a good choice for diabetics

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when healthy adults with high LDL levels ate one serving of pistachios daily, their LDL cholesterol levels dropped by nine percent. Those who ate two servings per day saw a 12 percent drop in LDL.

Pistachios fight heart disease and stroke by doing their part to lower cholesterol levels. They are also rich in the antioxidants, helping to control the inflammation that leads to heart disease and stroke.

This is good news for people with type 2 diabetes.

A 2015 study showed that, while adding pistachios to the diet didn’t seem to improve blood sugar control, it did have a positive effect on total cholesterol, cholesterol ratios, and triglycerides. Since having diabetes increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, anything you can do to control these factors through diet is a plus.
