If you start to see the skin around your ankles becoming darker and darker (usually on your inner ankle first) this could be a sign that the veins in your legs aren’t functioning properly.

This condition, known as chronic venous insufficiency, happens when the valves in your veins become compromised so that the blood in your legs doesn’t return to your heart like it’s supposed to. And, when it pools in your legs, your ankles begin to look dark.

If this goes on too long, you can end up with venous ulcers, where your skin breaks open, causing sores to form.
