5 herbs to tackle type 2 diabetes

3. Ginseng root (Korean and American ginseng)

This popular herb has been shown to be useful as a treatment for infections and diabetes for up to three months with repeated courses. One study showed a significant reduction in post-prandial (after-meal) glucose versus placebo in type 2 diabetes.

You can find ginseng tea and supplements at your natural health food store or online. Just remember to choose either American ginseng or Korean red ginseng.

And, whether you drink a hot cup of ginseng tea or take it in supplement form, make sure to take a 1-week break from it after every 3-4 weeks, as it can lose its effectiveness with continual use.

Caution: Don’t take ginseng if you’re already taking an MAOI, blood pressure or heart medications, or any blood clotting medications like aspirin or warfarin. If you are on any of these medicines or others you take regularly, it wouldn’t hurt to ask your doctor if he thinks energy-boosting ginseng might interfere with them.
