5 herbs to tackle type 2 diabetes
5. Cinnamon
Lab tests by researchers at University of California in Santa Barbara (reported in Diabetes Care) show that cinnamon increases sugar metabolism in fat cells 20-fold. Researchers have also discovered that less than one-half teaspoon of cinnamon daily for 40 days — sprinkled or prepared in food — significantly dropped blood sugar levels in 60 study participants with Type 2 diabetes.
Before you start upping your daily dose of cinnamon, there’s one more thing you should know…
There are two types of cinnamon: Ceylon cinnamon and cassia cinnamon (also known as Chinese cinnamon). Ceylon cinnamon is what you’ll want to purchase, especially if you’re taking it daily for it’s health-boosting benefits. Ceylon cinnamon is purer than cassia cinnamon, which contains high doses of a toxic compound called coumarin. Couramin can take a toll on your liver and kidneys if you eat a lot of it.
