5 little-known reasons acid reflux meds make you feel worse

Magnesium supplements

4. B12 and magnesium deficiencies

Research has shown that taking either proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers can result in a serious deficiency of vitamin B12. In fact, taking a proton pump inhibitor for more than two years carries a 65 percent risk of B12 deficiency, while taking an H2 blocker for the same amount of times comes with a 25 percent increased risk.

Once again, the higher your dose, the higher your risk. Take a double dose and you double your risk.

A B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue, memory problems, constipation, balance and nerve problems, and numbness and tingling in your hands and feet.

And, to top it off, the FDA has warned that taking acid reflux drugs for more than a year can also leave you deficient in the mineral magnesium — a warning that was issued for both prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

If you have a magnesium deficiency, you can end up with leg spasms, heart arrhythmias and even seizures.
